Contact to the skin may cause itching, tingling, thermal and caustic burns and permanent damage. Very severe exposures may result in difficult breathing, coughing and chemical bronchitis. Sodium is essential, but controversely surrounds the amount required.Ĭontact of sodium with water, including perspiration causes the formation of sodium hydroxide fumes, which are highly irritating to skin, eyes, nose and throat. The amount of sodium a person consumes each day varies from individual to individual and from culture to culture some people get as little as 2 g/day, some as much as 20 grams. Too much sodium can damage our kidneys and increases the chances of high blood pressure. Sodium is also required for nerve and muscle functioning. It is necessary for humans to maintain the balance of the physical fluids system. Sodium is a compound of many foodstuffs, for instance of common salt. The sun and many other stars shine with visible light in which the yellow component dominates and this is given out by sodium atoms in a high-energy state. The production of salt is around 200 million tonnes per year this huge amount is mainly extracted from salt deposits by pumping water down bore holes to dissolve it and pumping up brine. Sodium salts are found in seawater (1.05%), salty lakes, alkaline lakes and mineral spring water. The most important sodium salts found in nature are sodium chloride (halite or rock salt), sodium carbonate (trona or soda), sodium borate (borax), sodium nitrate and sodium sulfate. Sodium is, after chloride, the second most abundant element dissolved in seawater. Sodium is the sixth most abundant element in The Earth’s crust, which contains 2,83% of sodium in all its forms. ![]() Solid sodium carbonate is needed to make glass. Other uses are: to improve the structure of certain alloys in soap, in combination with fatty acids, in sodium vapor lamps, to descal metals, to purify molten metals. Sodium is also a component of sodium chloride (NaCl) a very important compount found everywhere in the living environment. Sodium in its metallic form is very important in making esters and in the manufacture of organic compounds. The second type of reaction includes the replacement of halogen by sodium, to obtain a sodium organic compound. One of them requires the condensation of two organic compounds, which form halogens when those are eliminated. There are two general reactions with organic halides. The reaction of sodium with alcohols is similar to the reaction of sodium with water, but slower. Sodium doesn’t react with paraffinic hydrocarbons, but it forms addition compounds with naphthalene and other aromatic polycyclic compounds and with aryl alkenes. It also reacts with various metallic halides to form the metal and sodium chloride. Sodium hardly reacts with carbon, but it does react with halogens. Sodium and hydrogen react above 200✬ (390✯) to form sodium hydride. Sodium doesn’t react with nitrogen, not even at very high temperatures, but it can react with ammonia to form sodium amide. ![]() When it’s exposed to air, metallic sodium recently cut looses its silvery appearance and acquires an opaque grey colour due to the formation of a sodium oxide coating. Sodium reacts quickly with water, and also with snow and ice, to produce sodium hydroxide and hydrogen. ![]() From the commercial point of view, sodium is the most important of all the alkaline metals. ![]() On the Huffington Post, you can find a countdown of The Most Psychotic Movie Villains of All Time, featuring everyone from Freddy Krueger to Norman Bates. Trainspotting’s Begbie is described as “psychotic” in practically every review I have read ranging from the Guardian to the Sun (the latter also describes Begbie as “psychopathic”, using the terms interchangeably). Examples of journalists’ misuse of the word “psychotic” are everywhere. “That’s the media for you,” he said, brimming with frustration. Listening to my reflections on the negative associations of the word “psychotic”, he explained how common my feelings were in his clients. I read up on psychosis and had several sessions with a community mental health nurse. It wasn’t until I had taken the right drugs and rebalanced various chemicals in my brain that I began to listen to the professionals who were there to help me. Like many people who experience any kind of deep depression I lacked hope, but my warped state of mind took that further We were all orbiting “reality” in our own ways. My fantasies of having committed a great sin escalated as I was taunted by one patient who believed she was the devil, and offered salvation by another who sang religious songs and walked around the ward with arms outstretched. Like many psychotic patients, I was convinced the nurses were out to get me, and that I was being punished for something. I said very little and did even less, but my mind was racing. ![]() Every patient was a character in my “story”, as were the nurses. I spent 10 days in a psychiatric hospital, silent and shy. “So I have done something wrong … maybe I am an evil person,” I thought. As I sat in my living room, being told I was psychotic, I interchanged the word with “dangerous” and felt myself spiral deeper into a delusion of guilt. As the mental health charity Mind states on its website, “lots of people wrongly think that the word ‘psychotic’ means ‘dangerous’”. Yet a glance through any film review section, in any newspaper or magazine, will probably suggest something different. The two are not linked, and they are certainly not the same. But the word with which “psychotic” is so regularly interchanged is “psychopathic”, defined as a “chronic mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behaviour”. According to the NHS, somebody who is psychotic will “perceive things differently to those around them this might involve hallucinations and delusions”. I didn’t realise it then, but I was experiencing for the first time the true impact of misused words. Unsurprisingly, this added more weight to my own delusional and self-loathing narrative. ![]() It conjured up something very different, and very upsetting: serial killers and fictitious villains. But that simple message was not what I heard in the stigma-ridden word, psychotic. During my own episode of psychosis I was, in medical terms, detached from reality. McCarthy defended his decision to release the security footage to Carlson and said there is nothing unusual about sending exclusives to media organizations. Pelosi spokesperson Aaron Bennett said that the California Democrat never personally authorized any defendant to access that footage “because Speaker Pelosi did not have that authority and believes that it appropriately belongs to security officials.” “The defendants have had this ability to come and see the footage,” he said. On Tuesday, McCarthy contended that January 6 defendants were able to access security footage of the attack before he was speaker and when former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi led the chamber. CNN also has requested access to the footage. Publicly releasing video was one of the many concessions McCarthy made in his bid to become House speaker earlier this year, and the California Republican gave Carlson exclusive access to all of the US Capitol security footage from January 6 last week. Joseph McBride, an attorney for several Capitol riot defendants, told CNN Tuesday that McCarthy’s office granted him access to 41,000 hours of Capitol security footage from that day, and he has filed in court to seek a delay in one defendant’s trial. The access for defendants accused in the January 6 Capitol attack has already come up in court. Barry Loudermilk, the subcommittee chairman, said in a statement. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s office said on Tuesday that lawyers for defendants facing charges in the January 6, 2021, insurrection will be granted access to US Capitol security footage as the top House Republican has faced scrutiny for allowing Fox News host Tucker Carlson to view the video before widely releasing it. ![]() The 1971 Act stipulated that the wild horse be managed at its then-current population level, officially estimated by BLM at 17,000 (three years later, BLM’s first census found over 42,000 horses). Like the bison, the wild horse had been driven to the edge. They were run off cliffs, gunned down at full gallop, shot in corralled bloodbaths, and buried in mass graves. They were chased by helicopters and sprayed with buckshot they were run down with motorized vehicles and, deathly exhausted, weighted with tires so they could be easily picked up by rendering trucks.
